Bay, A Poem by Christy Geraghty ... |
Today
we bring you a beautiful poem by local historian and poet Christy Geraghty. Christy
how in his 86th year was born in Balbriggan and lived in no. 2 Chapel Street.
Speaking to Christy he informed us that his
family association with Balbriggan can be traced back five generations. As we
say a “True Local”. A little bit about Newhaven Bay or sometimes referred to as
Cromwell’s Harbour (folklore only) just beyond the Sailors Grave. This was actually
the first harbour in Balbriggan before Baron Hamilton developed our new and much
improved local harbour. At Newhaven Bay the boats dropped their catch of herrings
which was then taken to the village of Balscadden meaning the “Town of the Herring
“ Today’s poem by Christy is one of a collection
he gave me and over the coming months we hope to feature them on balbriggan.info
for your enjoyment. Also included is a photograph of Christy on the main street
in Balbriggan taken after one of his many walks. Balbriggan.info wish Christy
health in the future and look forward to reading more of his work during the coming
year. Click
