Parents and children put all their creativity talents together to come up with some fantastic creations. Items collected from the beach including bird feathers, shells and even a couple of spent fireworks from last nights display.

31-May-14: The sky lit up over Balbriggan last night for the annual Balbriggan Summerfest Fireworks Extravaganza. Crowds lines the beach front waiting with eager anticipation for what turned out to be a fantastic display. A big well done to the Balbriggan Summerfest committee for a fantastic show. Balbriggan Summerfest Opening Ceremony

31-May-14: The Balbriggan Summerfest Opening Ceremony got off to a fantastic start with young Molly McNally opening the ceremony along with five outstanding GAA players from O'Dwyers GAA Club, Aoife Curran, Erin Healy, Tom Downes, Erica Byrne and Clare McGrath. Displays by Blue Dragon Iron Fitness and the Bokwa ladies kept the crowd entertained and there was live music from Jakki Roy and Joe Costello . Molly McNally's cousin performed a song which she had written specially for Molly and Ben Marry did a fantastic job of MC.

30-May-14: Congratulations to Stephen Carvin overall winner of the Balbriggan Summerfest Pot Black Snooker Competition and to Nicholas Mulhall runner up on the night. The pot black is straight knockout competition and the draw is random, so anyone can face anyone making for a very exciting competition.

Balbriggan Summerfest School Choir Concert 2014

29-May-14: Attendees were in for a real treat this evening as the Balbriggan Summerfest School Choir Concert got underway in St. Peter & Paul's Church. For many of the children it was their first time to sing and teachers and parents must be very proud of the fantastic performances from these young students. The choirs sang a wide range of songs, from world music and sacred music to pop, Irish and classical. Accompaniments varied from keyboard to voilin and recorder.

29-May-14: The Great Balbriggan Bake Off in association with Balbriggan ICA, was held in the Senior Citizens Hall on Wednesday 28th May. The judges had a hard job choosing from the fantastic pastries and breads on offer. Congratulations to Anna Holland who won with her green cupcakes and to all the bakers who took part.

The cheque was the proceeds of Balbriggan Dramatic Society's production of 'The Canaries' hosted  by Balbriggan ICA. The ICA would like to thank everyone who supported the event which was a great success.

Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín Euroball27-May-14: Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigín, in conjunction with Gaelscoil Riabhach (Loughrea Co. Galway) and 5 European schools (spain, Turkey, Hungary, Croatia and Bulgaria) have been involved in a 2 year long project which focussed on developing a new sport - Euroball.  This game is all inclusive and  encourages equal participation between boys and girls and also caters for those who have disabilities.

Balbriggan Summerfest Aquathon 201426-May-14: One of our favourite events of Balbriggan Summerfest has got to be the Aquathon. This evening saw 53 athletes take to the calm water for the 750 meter swim which was swiftly followed by the 5km run. 1st Man - Aidan Burke, 2nd man - Paul Roderick and 3rd was Fiach Macveid. 1st lady across the line was Marie Boland followed by Jenny Algar in second place and Louise Morgan in third.

Balsccadden Tractor Run 2014

25-May-14: Balscadden village was a hive of activity today as the annual tractor run got under way. As the tractors headed out on their course the Balscadden Fundraising Committee had a range of activities for all to enjoy. Fantastic food, cakes, crafts and and music were the order of the day as the community got together for a good old chin wag. Music rang from the stage with Joe Costello and John Farrell, Kisses from France and the Happy Days. A fantastic day out for the family...

24-May-14: Balbriggan Golf Club held a Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser on 19th April and the night was a huge success. Organising committee Deirdre Foran, Barbara Kenny Collette Guildea, Rachel Mc Evoy & Frances Whelan and the dancers put on a fantastic show as did Ann Gallen and Tim Sheehy who were MC's on the night.

23-May-14: A big congratulations to Christopher White of Three Gates Florist & Nursery in Naul who achieved a Silver Medal at Chelsea Flower Show. Christopher's exhibit titles Twisted & Tangled’. Christopher's exhibit is on an iron stand which is placed on a pedestal with circular shapes to represent the twists and it is in a contemporary style.

19-May-14: Big day for Bracken Boxing Clubs Niamh Fay lifting the All Ireland Title Girl1 42 kg  beating Aoife Burke from Peagus Boxing Club on a tko in the 2nd round. Niamh follows in her proud fathers foot steps also an Irish champion himself. Jessica Bissett beat Niamh Flynn from St Brigid's Boxing Club in Kildare in a barnstorming battle winning a unanimous decision making up for losing out in last years final.

Man-O-War Ladies vs. Under 16/18 Team17-May-14: On Friday 16th of May, Man O’War’s under-16/18 girls’ teams joined forces to beat the club’s GAA for Mothers under the hot sun. The box-to-box affair was exciting from the off with fierce competition from every player with everyone showing little nerves. The close contest ended with the younger ladies winning but massive credit must go to both teams for the effort and commitment shown.

AIB Photo Journalism Exhibition Opens in Balbriggan

16-May-14: AIB has been sole sponsor of the Irish Photojournalism Awards for the past 9 years. These annual awards, which are run in conjunction with the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI), recognise, reward and showcase excellence in Press Photography. The AIB Photojournalism exhibition showcases over 118 of the winning photographs and travels to AIB branches and local festivals around the country. The exhibition is currently in the AIB Balbriggan branch till Friday 23rd May and is certainly worth a visit..

Star of tthe Sea A.C. 5km Road Race & Fun Run14-May-14: Star of the Sea Athletics club held a 5km Road Race & Fun Run on Tuesday 13th May. The race began at St. Patricks GAA, Cockhiill Road, Stamullen and the atmosphere in the village was electric. Congratulations to Conor Healy mens winner who came in at a time of 15.13, to Eoin Callaghan in second place with a time of 15.45 and to Neil Callaghan, third place with a time of 16.07 and to Ladies overall winner Mary Handley with a time of 18.44.

Farrell Welcomes More Funding for Pyrite Affected Homes

Alan Farrell14-May-14: Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell has welcomed the announcement from Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan of further funding for the pyrite remediation scheme. Minister Hogan’s announcement today (Wednesday) brings funding levels to €20 million to date. “The increase in funding to the pyrite remediation scheme is a positive step in tackling this issue and helping homeowners throughout the country, and particularly in Dublin Fingal, whose homes have been affected by pyrite.”

Sod Turned for New €1.3m All Weather Pitch in Balbriggan

14-May-14: Yesterday saw the turning of the sod for the €1.3m biggest All Weather Pitch in Fingal. The new all-weather facility is at the back of Bremore Castle and will effectively mean that teams can train and play at the same location, all year round. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Kieran Dennison and Caithaoirleach Balbriggan Town Council Cllr Peadar O'Kelly welcomed the addition to sporting facilities in the area, especially for ODwyers GAA, Balbriggan FC and all other clubs.

13-May-14:  Several months back when Balbriggan Tidy Towns heard that the Giro d’Italia cycle race was going to visit Balbriggan we were very excited just like the rest of the community. We knew the Town would put on a spectacular welcome and we all looked forward to a fantastic event.

However during a site visit to Balbriggan by Aileen O‘Connor  of Fingal CoCo we started to talk about the fact the race would pass through the town at a phenomenal pace and the event would be over in a matter of hours.

Ardgillan Community College Success in SciFest13-May-14: Over 200 students took part in this science fair from both north and south with many Dublin schools as far away as Lucan. Ardgillan students presented their investigations and findings to the esteemed judges of the day.  After category prizes are awarded the five best projects presented, open to any age, are announced.   The best schools in the country are recipients of these wonderful trophies.  Ardgillan took two of the five top awards.  Judging was presided over by Mr. George Porter, Physics Ireland and SciFest CEO.

Giro D'Italia Makes A Big Impact in Balbriggan

Giro D'Italia Comes To Balbriggan11-May-14: There was great excitement in Balbriggan today as world’s elite cyclists battle it out for the pink jersey en route from Armagh to Dublin in the final stage of the Grande Partenza (The Big Start) covering a total of 187km. Residents and visitors were dressed in pink in support of the riders as they passed through and the cheers could probably be heard from the helicopter that passed overhead for tv coverage of the great race.

All along the route you will see signs stating that parking is strictly prohibited from 7:00pm tonight until 4:30pm on Sunday.

Bracken Boxing Club 'Fight Night'08-May-14: Bracken Boxing Club held its annual fundraising show on Sunday 4th May and hosted a Connacht selection with standout performers - Leon Davis, Niamh Fay, Cameron Bennett and Christy O'Reilly who boxed Mohammed Jawad from the Netherlands. There were big performances from Cian Leech and Jessica Bissett who appeared unfortunate not to have won on the night.

Party goers turned up dressed for the occasion with cowboy hats and checkered shirts. The BBQ was sizzling outside and line dancing was the order on the dance floor. Julianstown Pinks It Up for the Giro D'italia05-May-14: Our neighbours in Julianstown have done a great job of preparing their town for the arrival of the Giro D'italia next week. The trees all along the route are covered with a pink fabric and the local school is awash with pink and a great welcome for the world’s elite cyclists as they pass through on 11th May. 05-May-14: Set in the stunning surroundings of Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan, the Essential Gathering Festival, featured daytime workshops and demonstrations, top instructors, inspirational speakers, and holistic healers such as Liz Svennson, Sinéad Wyse, Robbie H. Andrews, and many more. The dragon proved a great hit with adults and children and music rang from the walled garden where street hypnotists wowed the crowds. A relaxing and very informative event.

Water Meter Installations Cause Leaks in Balbriggan!

03-May-14: We were contacted by a local resident this week to say that a water meter had been installed outside his house and since the installation a steady flow of water has been pouring from the said location. The Irish Water website states (to name but a few!) - Water is a valuable resource but it is expensive to deliver. It is costing €1.2 billion every year to run the public water system, with €1 billion of this funding coming from the Exchequer. This current funding model is no longer sustainable. In addition our infrastructure is badly in need of an overhaul.

Lorraine Jackson Stage School Prepares for 10th Anniversary Show ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat

03-May-14: The Lorraine Jackson Stage School is celebrating its 10th year in Balbriggan offering boys and girls from the age of 3yrs to 15+yrs a friendly environment to experience song, dance and musical theatre.  The teachers and students are looking forward to performing this year’s school show ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ which is an exciting and fun filled variety show that includes timeless musical and Disney classics.

Blue Dragon White Collar Combat Boxing & Kickboxing

27-Apr-14: Blue Dragon hosted a White Collar Combat Boxing & Kickboxing event in aid of Crumlin Childrens Hospital on 26th April in Santry Hall Industrial Etate. With over 20 fights on the night the fighters put on a great show and showed great courage as some of them took to the ring for the first time. A great night whilst raising money for a great cause. Well done to all involved!

Three Fishermen Rescued in Balbriggan

Three Fishermen Rescued Tonight24-Apr-14: The Coast Guard helicopter and Skerries lifeboat were launched tonight when three fishermen got into trouble just north of Balbriggan Harbour.

 

The three were pulled to safety by the Skerries Lifeboat as their boat got stranded on the rocks.

Ardgillan Castle Easter Egg Hunt 2014

21-Apr-14: Ardgillan Castle was the place to be today as thousands turned up for the annual Easter egg hunt. The Easter bunny entertained the children and posed for photos as parents collected their tickets inside the castle. Children (and parents!) searched the fields to find the plastic Easter eggs which they then swapped for large chocolate eggs back in the castle.  A well organised and attended event in a spectacular location, well done to all involved.

The Government announced €15 million in funding for the Book Rental Scheme in Budget 2014. It has now been confirmed that all primary schools throughout the country are to benefit from this valuable initiative, the funding for which was secured through the proceeds of the sale of the National Lottery.

Tony Murphy19-Apr-14: Public Representative, Tony Murphy, challenges Fingal County Council to address the sub-standard water issue in Balbriggan before handing over to Irish Water and washing its hands of the matter after years of neglect. “Balbriggan has been badly let down by Fingal County Council and local councillors” says Murphy. “We need action now to address the issue of water going into Balbriggan homes which is destroying central heating systems, washing machines, dishwashers, showers and kettles.

18-Apr-14: Naíonra 'Tigín Na Trá' held their open day today at their new premises on Mill Street in Balbriggan, opposite the entrance to the front beach and beside Quay Street carpark. There was a fantastic turnout and the young visitors had a chance to look around and play and give it their seal of approval. Naíonra 'Tigín Na Trá' will be offering free preschool places for children who qualify for the ECCE scheme.

Tesco Community Challenge Donates €1,500 to Three Local Groups

17-Apr-14: Tesco Extra Balbriggan has donated €1,500 between three local good causes, as part of its “Tesco Supporting Our Community” initiative. The lucky charities are Balbriggan Branch of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind received €675, Remember Us received €525 and O’Dwyer’s GAA Club received €300. Customers are given a token at the checkout every time they shop in the store and then place that token in the box allotted to their favoured local good causes.

Giro d'Italia is Coming to Town...

15-Apr-14: Come and see the world’s elite cyclists battle it out for the pink jersey en route from Armagh to Dublin - passing through Balbriggan - in the final stage of the Grande Partenza (The Big Start) covering a total of 187km. Giro D'Italia is one of the world's most prestigious sporting events and one of the European cycling calendar's three Grand Tours, along with the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. It is a long distance, multi-stage bicycle road race for professional cyclists, held primarily in Italy, over a three-week period in May and June each year. Mullan Backs Community Fund Proposal

Garrett Mullan15-Apr-14: Local election candidate Garrett Mullan has backed the call to create a Community Grants Fund to support voluntary organisations using funds that councillors currently use to go to conferences and training. Community Alert: Stolen Bags

Community Alert15-Apr-14: Over the last couple of weeks we have received two emails about bags being taken in the town. Please be extra vigilant and make sure to report any crimes such as these to the local Gardai. The first bag was taken in the vicinity of Chapel St and Balbriggan Community College on Wednesday 9th April. Some of the items in this purse were of very sentimental value to the owner and can not be replaced .

After coming down with a virus midweek he climbed out of his sick bed cheered by 80plus strong supporters with full mini buses having left from Balbriggan and his native Bettystown. Christy didn't disappoint them winning the youth 1 70kg title.

Fingal Council Offices & Community Facilities to Remain at Balbriggan Town Hall

Grainne Maguire is delighted to announce that following consultation with Mr. Peter Caulfield, Head of Corporate Affairs, it has been agreed that following the discontinuance of Balbriggan Town Council, the Fingal County Council office will remain open in the Town Hall and that the community facilities and rooms will also remain available for public use. Cllr. Maguire said "this is great news for Balbriggan as we will continue to have local access to Fingal County Council services and facilities and our Town Hall will remain at the heart of the community".

New Daycare Center for Balbriggan Granted Planning Permission

12-Apr-14: I am delighted that Prosper Fingal have been granted planning permission on the 7th of April for a new daycare center in Balbriggan said Cllr Tom O'Leary. A €50K Lotto grant was approved at the end of 2013 by Minister James Reilly TD. I was briefed on the plans for the daycare center by Ceo of Prosper  Pat Reen and Board Director Conor Sparks last June at the opening of a residential unit in Rush, which also received lotto grant support from the Department of Health.

An extensive body of work was carried out including grass cutting, strimming, and spraying. A safety audit and ROSPA inspection had been carried out on the playground on 10th March and the ROSPA report in this regard was presented to the Operations Department on Monday 31st March.

Bremore Castle Balbriggan - Inside the Castle Walls08-Apr-14: Today we had the pleasure of visiting Bremore Castle to take some photographs and show the great work that is being done to restore this impressive castle. Built around the 16th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair and the upper stories had collapsed however, over the last number of year Fingal County Council, in conjunction with FAS and Balbriggan & District Historical Society are restoring the castle based on how the castle appears in antiquarian drawings.

Fabulous Sky and Rainbow Over Balbriggan07-Apr-14: With heavy showers today and the sun deciding to make an appearance before it dissappeared for the night there was a fantastic rainbow in the sky over Balbriggan this evening. We headed down to the Martello tower to see if we could capture it however we were a little late. Christy O'Reilly Aims for His Sixth Title

07-Apr-14: Christy O'Reilly from Balbriggan's Bracken Boxing club celebrated a great win last night in the National Boxing Sstadium over Kevin Kehoe from Marble City Boxing Club setting up a mouth watering clash vs European bronze medalist and fellow Irish champion Brett McGinty from Oakleaf in Derry next Saturday. Christy is going for his 6th title and hopefully he will be joined by Denis Gifford who competes in the super heavyweight semi final on Friday.

Scoil Chormaic CNS Intercultural Day

07-Apr-14: Scoil Chormaic CNS held an Intercultural Day in the school on Friday 4th April. Each class picked a country that they would represent and they set to work researching and learning about their chosen country. The students gave examples of local food, national costumes, national produce, history and language and students took to the stage to sing, dance and converse in the language of their chosen country. Thank you to all the pupils for their efforts, and a big thank you to the teachers and principal Ms Deirdre Corcoran and all the parents who turned out on the day...

05-Apr-14: €6m Amenity project to go to tender in May 2014 - great news for Balbriggan - Cllr Tom O’Leary I am delighted to have been informed that the long awaited Balbriggan Swimming Pool and Sports complex will advertised for  pre tender or “ Expressions of Interest “ in May 2014. This project has been held up for many years. The development consists of a new two-storey rugby clubhouse and a separate two storey sports centre complete with a 25-metre six-land swimming pool, gym and sports hall with facilities.

Ian Said: "A Drogheda Arts Festival Programme which is currently being distributed in the town describes Balbriggan as 'a grubby Dublin suburb town'. I think that this description of our lovely town is highly offensive and not what would be expected from a neighbouring town.

Excellent Final of the Pat Browne Memorial Cup at Balbriggan RFC03-Apr-14: The final of the Pat Browne Memorial Cup took place at Balbriggan RFC tonight with two teams St Patrick's N.S. Stamullen and St Molaga's N.S. Balbriggan battling it out to win the coveted Pat Browne Memorial trohpy. In what was a close game both teams gave it their all. A big congratulations to St Patrick's N.S. Stamullen on a fantastic win and to the runners up St Molaga's N.S. Balbriggan on an exellent game.

Ardgillan Parkrun - An Early Morning Challenge....31-Mar-14: Normally I am writing stories about others but today I thought I woud tell a little story of my own.... On Saturday I woke early and decided to take a trip up to Ardgillan Demesne to walk the course that the Ardgillan Parkrunners undertake. The morning was foggy but had a magical and fresh feel. The chorus of the birds singing in the trees and the sight of a couple of squirrels was enough to put a spring in my step as I traversed the course.

Closure of the Coast Road between Balbriggan and Skerries31-Mar-14: Closure of the Coast Road between Balbriggan and Skerries will begin on Tuesday 1st April and will continue until Friday 11th April 2014. Resurfacing works will take place between 8:00pm and 7:00am. Works will not be carried out on Friday 4th, Saturday 5th or Sunday 6th April 2014.

Balbriggan Late Night Soccer Winners Win Over 16 Europa League

30-Mar-14: A BIG congratulations to the winners of the Balbriggan Late Night Soccer League who went on to win the over 16 Europa League at the Garda/FAI Citywide Finals in Irishtown on Friday 27th March. This is the first time since the leagues started 5 years ago that Balbriggan have won in any category. 58 teams in total played on the night with 3 representing Balbriggan.

Todays race commemorated Ireland’s first world track cycling champion and Balbriggan native Harry Reynolds covering 52.6km. The race started at the Man O War Pub and cyclists will covered 6 laps of the circuit (5 laps of 8.8km and 1 lap of 8.6km. Race results to follow...

Balbriggan Community College Got Talent

27-Mar-14: Balbriggan Communty college had an excellent talent show tonight where students took to the stage to show off their talents in singing, dancing & beatboxing. Keeping the proceedings running smoothly with his usual wit was the wonderful Ben Marry who did a great job on the night. The acts had fantastic support and encouragement from the audience and fellow students as they performed to the packed crowd.

26-Mar-14: Five years playing with Dublin and Aoife Curran finally gets her home coming with the Dub's in Bremore Park. Once again Ulster sends down a challenger for the Dubs. This time its the turn of the Dublin minor ladies captained by our very own Aoife Curran to take on the senior ladies of Antrim. For the first time in ages the sun shone in Balbriggan as Aoife stepped up to take the toss and decided to play up the hill in a game which will play 3 x 25 minute sides.

Final of Pat Browne Memorial Cup to take place on 3rd April

Pat Browne Memorial Cup Final26-Mar-14: Thursday 3rd April will see 5th & 6th class students representing two local schools line out to compete for the inaugural Pat Browne Tag Rugby Trophy. Pat was very involved in Balbriggan RFC, and was a huge supporter of Youth rugby in his day, being heavily responsible for the setting up of the original Mini and Youths rugby structure in the club.

Ultramarathon25-Mar-14: Balbriggan RFC's Under 12's Coach Tony Dowdall is missing out on the opportunity to see his team in action in Donnybrook on Friday 4th April as they play in the half time demonstration game during the Leinster A's British and Irish Cup Quarter Final meeting with their Munster rivals as instead he will be resting up prior to a 56 mile UltraMarathon from Glasgow to Edinburgh the very next day.

25-Mar-14: AVIVA Soccer Sisters Easter Camps in Fingal - The Football Association of Ireland and Fingal County Council are delighted to announce upcoming AVIVA Soccer Sister Easter camps at a number of Fingal venues.  The camps are open to girls aged 7-12 years of age with the aim of increasing the number of girls playing soccer, and will take place each day throughout the Easter school holidays.

Balbriggan Community College Race into F1 in Schools National Finals

25-Mar-14: Back in October of last year a group of second year students from Balbriggan Community College were selected to represent the school in the F1 in Schools competition as part of the Advanced Learning Programme (ALP) within the school. The students who took part were Liam Kavanagh, Kacper Kencler, Dylan Tucker and Gary Tiscovschi.

Successful Public Meeting on Water Charges in Balbriggan

24-Mar-14: A well-attended public meeting was held in the Clubs Community Centre in Balbriggan last Thursday night. The meeting was hosted by the Anti Austerity Alliance with speakers: Paul Murphy MEP, Joe Higgins TD, and Maurice Sweeney (AAA).Paul Murphy MEP outlined the international economic context in which water charges are being introduced and provided revealing figures and statistical information relating to the issue.  Mr Murphy also stressed the importance of building an active campaign to oppose water charges in the coming year.

Balbriggan Order of Malta Needs You!

Order of Malta23-Mar-14: Order of Malta are currently looking for volunteer Doctors, Paramedics, Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians,  Emergency First Responders, Cardiac First Responders and First Aiders. The group train every Tuesday from 8:30pm to 10:00pm in the Order of Malta unit in Hampton Street, Balbriggan and they cover various duties throughout the year in their ambulance and they also provide First Aid training.

Balbriggan Cycle Race Series Weekend 2014

23-Mar-14: Balbriggan Cycling Club holds its annual race weekend onSaturday 29th March and Sunday 30th March 2014. Saturday’s race commemorates Ireland’s first world track cycling champion and Balbriggan native Harry Reynolds.  Sunday’s cycling action switches to the Ring Commons Sports Centre for the Ben Mc Kenna and Jim (Jazzer) Wherity Memorial Races.

Boxers from Bracken Boxing Club Making Their Mark

Bracken Boxing Club21-Mar-14: Bracken Boxing Club recently travelled to Roosenthal, Netherlands to show off their skills. Niamh 'fast hands' Fay at only 11 years old made her international debut and a little bit of history she's the 1st lady to represent the club overseas. Niamh gave a devaststating performance winning all three rounds comfortably Christy O'Reilly won the best technical boxer award with a typical clinical display beating Memit Demir who was all of 26 months older than O'Reilly.

Seachtain Na Gaeilge in Baile Brigin

21-Mar-14: Seachtain Na Gaeilge was celebrated in style in Baile Brigín in 2014. A great night of Ceol agus Craic was had at the Oíche Ghaelach in the Central on Monday 3rd March. Renouned Irish language poet Aifric Nic Aodha gave a poetry reading in Balbriggan library on Thursday 6th March and it was enjoyed greatly by the regular Thursday evening Ciorcal Cómhrá.

St. Patrick's Day Balbriggan 2014

17-Mar-14: The people of Balbriggan took to the streets today to celebrate St Patrick's Day with the annual parade. The parade kicked into gear starting from Drogheda Street and making it's way south along the main street. The street was awash with a sea of green and the revellers marched along with great energy and a spring in their step. With as many people turning up to cheer on the parade as there was taking part the true Balbriggan community spirit was ever present making for a fantastic celebration. Well done to the people of Balbriggan on a fantastic day!

Glebe North Ballroom Dancing

16-Mar-14: The Ladies Committee at Glebe North have been running the ever popular dance in Glebe North FC at Market Green, Balbriggan every Saturday night from 9:00pm - Midnight for the last 15 years. New friendships are formed and old friends catch up as they take to the floor to show their moves. People travel from far and wide to take part and different bands perform each week. The dance floor is full from the moment the music starts and there is a great athmosphere and the night is open to anyone who would love to come along...

Balbriggan Summerfest Family Fortunes15-Mar-14: A new event for 2014, Balbriggan Summerfest Family Fortunes turned out to be great hit. Four families - The McGrath's The Howards, The Harfords and The Pynes - battled it out for a collection of great prizes. Compere Ciaran Baneham did a great job of keeping the contestents on course with his usual wit and charm and Mitchell and the Crew entertained the audience during the break. Winners on the night were the McGrath family who beat the experienced Pyne family (who had appeared on the show with Alan Hughes from TV3 back in January 2012) in the final. A great night and another great success for Balbriggan Summerfest committee...

Balbriggan Lions Club Present Cheque to Balbriggan Radio15-Mar-14: The Balbriggan Lions Club have made a donation to the town’s newest media outlet Radio Balbriggan. The community station will be going live online in the next few weeks & will aim to offer the diverse strands of Balbriggan’s global population a new choice in music & chat from across the World. Balbriggan Lions Club presented a cheque for €500 which the station will use for some electronic & computer equipment. Radio Balbriggan is part of the multi award winning Balbriggan Integration  Forum which is an initiative to promote diverse communities understanding each other & inter linking their projects.

Opening Night of Libero's Restaurant14-Mar-14: The opening took place of Libero's restaurant in Balbriggan tonight and staff have been working very hard over the last few weeks to make this a success. The restaurant which will open seven days a week from lunch till late with a menu that offers a wide range of cuisine from fish, chicken, pork and steaks and a range of Italian specials and of course some nice wines to tempt the palate. St Molaga's N.S. Transport Action Day13-Mar-14: St. Molaga's held an action day today in their school hall today to raise awareness of transport and the action day was part of the school's efforts to achieve their 4th Green School Flag, which is based on transport. The school recently had their assessment by An Taisce. The green school committee included parents, teachers and students, and they all worked very hard on achieving this flag.

Pat Browne Memorial Cup at Balbriggan RFC - Day 213-Mar-14: The second leg of the Pat Browne Memorial cup, qualifying rounds were held at Balbriggan RFC, Wednesday, This competition held for National schools in the area, were  today attended by, St Patricks NS Stamullen, Naul NS and St Georges NS. Each school fielded very talented players, and in a very strongly competitive round, St Patricks Stamullen, came out on top, but not without strong fights from St Georges or Naul.

Naul Road to Reopen Early Next Week

Naul Road to Reopen Early Next Week12-Mar-14: Cllr. Grainne Maguire requested an update from the Senior Engineer in charge of the works at the Naul Road at Millfield Shopping Centre.  The contractor has advised that by the end of this week the final surfacing of the road and cycle track will be completed and road signage will be put in place.  Anti-skid surfacing will then need to be put in place at the roundabout approach and then the white lining.

Balbriggan Horticultural Society are holding their last talk of the 2013/14 winter season this Thursday the 20th March in the Scout Den beside Lidl at 8.30. The talk will comprise of a really stunning presentation of photographs by Joe Curtis of the wildlife he has noted in his wonderful garden over the last year. Joe and his wife are talented gardeners and have painstakingly created a variety of unique environments in their garden to attract mammals, birds and insects.

Call for Roundtable Ministerial Meeting to Resolve €6m Balbriggan Swimming Pool Sports Complex Plan

Tom O'Leary12-Mar-14: Cllr Tom OLeary has called for a urgent round table meeting with 3 Ministers and Department  Officials and Fingal Co Council and Balbriggan RFC to resolve the impasse and delay on the long awaited Balbriggan Swimming Pool and Sports Complex Plan . Its way past time this project was built in Balbriggan said Cllr OLeary. The people of Balbriggan deserve modern community facilities and this has been recognised by the Government who have set aside a €3.5m Grant for the project and also Fingal Co Council who have earmarked €750,000 for this project in Balbriggan.

Construction Initiative Will Reduce Social Housing Waiting Lists and Create Jobs in Fingal  - Farrell

Alan Farrell11-Mar-14: Fine Gael TD, Alan Farrell, has today (Tuesday) welcomed the announcement of €4,750,000 investment in the construction of local authority housing in Fingal. Alan was speaking after the announcement of a €68 million Local Authority Construction Initiative by Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan TD. “I welcome today’s Government announcement of €68 million in funding to restart the local authority mainstream house building programme. In the North County, €4,750,000 will be invested to build at 12 houses at Glasmore Road in Swords and a further 27 units at Cappagh, near the Airport.

Pat Browne Memorial Cup at Balbriggan RFC11-Mar-14: Local primary schools 5th/6th class students from St. Molaga's, Educate Together N.S. & Balrothery N.S. took part in the Pat Browne Memorial Cup competition today. The competition is sponsored by Balbriggan RFC and Pat Browne was a former member and President of Balbriggan RFC who had a great interest in developing youth rugby for the club and has helped bring childrens rugby to the great levels it has reached today. Group stages will continue tomorrow with the final being played later in the month by the winners of each days group stage.

It was great to see so many people out and about and the exercise equipment is proving ever popular. Ryan Welcomes €15m Fund For Redevelopment Of Vacant Local Authority Housing

Brendan Ryan10-Mar-14: Brendan Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has welcomed the launch of a €15m fund that will see vacant local authority housing redeveloped and brought back into use as social housing. Ryan "Local authorities must submit their proposals for the funding by the 28th March. Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan, who has worked hard to alleviate the shortage of social housing, will then allocate the funding as soon as possible. The fund should see about 500 housing units that are now vacant, brought into use for families later this year.”

Balbriggan Youth Service Art Classes

10-Mar-14: Balbriggan Youth Service are starting a six week Art Class in Flemington Community Centre on Tuesday evenings from 11th March. The classes will run from 6:00pm - 7:30pm and will cater for the 10 - 12 years age group. The Art Teacher will focus on printing for the 6 weeks. We do however hope to run the classes for a longer period when schools are back in September with a wider range of art activities.

Dublin U14 Team vs. Monaghan in Balbriggan

09-Mar-14: On a cold wind swept Saturday afternoon in Bremore park Dublin U14 ladies took on the power of Monaghan's young ladies. The Ulster ladies won the toss and choice to play with the wind in the first half. From the start Monaghan looked strong having the first 2 chances of scores but putting both wide of the posts. Goal keeper Kate O Hagan seemed to get great distance in her kick outs against the gale blowing against her.

Replacement of the Lighthouse Dome at Balbriggan Harbour

07-Mar-14: The Balbriggan lighthouse has been without a dome since the early 1960s and the town has been looking for it to be restored for nearly 50 years. Recently Cllr Grainne Maguire submitted a question to Fingal County Council to get an update regarding the replacement of the lighthouse dome at Balbriggan harbour. Cllr Maguire said "I am delighted that plans are now currently being prepared for the replacement of the dome and which will also include works to the outer harbour wall. This will be welcome news to the residents of balbriggan and hopefully now we will have our ligthouse back to its former glory."

Erin Healy07-Mar-14: The Dublin U14 ladies are playing Monahan in a friendly in O'Dwyers at 1.45 on Saturday and O'Dwyers very own Erin Healy is on the panel. Out of 218 girls that went for trials in November 2013, the final panel of 30 were selected in February. Now with the top 30 girls in the county picked the Leinster championship is upon us.

Balbriggan Dramatic Society presents Canaries07-Mar-14: The Balbriggan Dramatic Society play 'Canaries' is currently running in the Bracken Court Hotel and with only 2 more nights (Friday & Saturday) it's definitely worth heading down to the Bracken Court Hotel for a great night of entertainment and laughs and to support these fine actors! The play is set in a bar just off the beach run by the smooth talking, Carlos who, between shifts at the bar, has the responsibility of looking after his somewhat determined Granny and Samantha, the holiday rep who loves to arrive with news of complications and disappointment but always delivered with a smile.

Foróige Drug Awareness Programme for Parents

06-Mar-14: CÚIS in Balbriggan Youth Service will be running a Free 4 week programme for the parents/guardians of young people using/ at risk of using drugs/ alcohol. The programme will provide informtion on drug trends, explore attitudes towards drugs and alcohol, explain signs and symptoms of drug use and support parents in dealing with these issues.

Franciscan College Gormanston Senior Team Win in the Leinsters05-Mar-14: Congratulations to the two O'Dwyers players involved with the Senior panel of Franciscan College Gormanston on winning the Leinster Senior "D" Football Final last Friday (28/2/14).  The team beat Marian College, Dublin on a score line of: Gormanston College 3-17 (26) Marian College 4-13 (25) AET.  A one point win for Franciscan College Gormanston, now crowned Leinster Champions!

Balbriggan Community College March to North Leinster Final

Balbriggan Community College04-Mar-14: On Thursday last the Balbriggan Community College first year soccer squad made their way to Dundalk for a North Leinster semi-final tie against Dundalk Grammar School. Having topped their group with three very convincing wins and 9 points there was a confident mood within the group. Due to recent weather a venue was hard to get and so eventually the excellent surface at Oriel Park was chosen.

Local Election Candidate Richie Davis Urges Residents to Vote

Richie Davis04-Mar-14: With the Local Elections less than twelve weeks away, I would encourage all of those who are registered to vote to do so. This years election will be the first in over a century that their will be no election for Balbriggan Town Council as they have been abolished come the first of June. At present their are five County Councillors representing the Balbriggan ward which also includes, Skerries-Rush-Lusk and rural Fingal. This will change on Friday May the 23rd when you will have the chance to elect eight Councillors.

Update on Naul Road Closure from Cllr Grainne Maguire

03-Mar-14: Following numerous complaints and concerns I had myself regarding the delay in re-opening the Naul Road at Millfield Shopping centre,  I contacted Fingal County Council last week to ask for an explanation for the delay in completing the works. Today, I received a reply from Tom O'Connor, Senior Engineer with FCC.  He advised me that there was a delay with the ESB completing the work in removing the two poles on the site.  This would be completed this week and the contractor will be then able to tar the road next Monday, 10th March.

Three Groups Chosen for First Round of Tesco Community Champion03-Mar-14: Back at the start of February we brought you the story of the Tesco Balbriggan Community Challenge. Shoppers had a chance to nomination their favoirite community group with a view to them receiving funding to help them on their way. The nominations have now been counted and the three groups who will have their own collection box at the front of the store are: Balbriggan Branch of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, Remember Us and O'Dwyers GAA Club.

Reuse vs Recycling in Balbriggan

03-Mar-14: Balbriggan Tidy Towns are launching a new awareness campaign to highlight the difference between Recycling and Re-using waste items. Over the last decade we have become very familiar with the Green recycling bin, where we place our waste cardboard and plastics for processing into new recycled paper and plastic containers by specialist recycling companies. However Re-use is different as it does not require any further processing to make the item useful again.

Tony Murphy Challenges Fingal County Council over illegal Road Closure

28-Feb-14: Public Representative, Tony Murphy, challenges Fingal County Council regarding the closure of a section of the Naul Road in Balbriggan without an appropriate Road Closure Licence being in place. “I have been contacted by numerous residents of Balbriggan regarding the undue traffic congestion experienced by them over the past month by the unofficial road closure on the Naul Road at Millfield Shopping Centre.” says Murphy, who is running as an independent candidate in the Fingal Local elections on 23rd May next.

Ardgillan Community College Students Art Exhibiton

27-Feb-14: The Ardgillan Community College students art exhibiton “Impressions of Brú na Boinne” officilaly opened tonight in the Brú Na Bóinne visitor centre in Donore, Co. Meath. The exhibition is the idea of the 5th year art students who have worked together with students from 1st, 2nd and 4th year to produce a variety of individual artworks that are on display in the visitor centre from the 27th of February through to the 20th of March 2014 and we strongly encourage you to take a trip out to see the fantastic works from the very talented students.

Happy 70th Birthday David

David Brangan27-Feb-14: David Brangan from Balbriggan.info celebrated his 70th birthday last weekend with family and friends. David is well known around the town for taking fantastic photographs and how apt that his birthday cake was a replica of his camera. David volunteers for Balbriggan Meals on Wheels, Balbriggan Cancer Support Group and the Balbriggan Branch of the Irish Guide Dogs (and these are just the ones we know about!)  David is always around taking photos to help promote this great town of ours and everything in it. David is a real ambassador for goodwill and we wish him the very best for his 70th Birthday.

Balbriggan Community Council Press Release

24-Feb-14: Balbriggan Community Council was set up following on from the successful ‘Save our Library Campaign’. With the abolishment of the Town Council happening on the 23rd May 2014 we felt it was necessary to have an alternative in place and ready to take up the reins. At the first meeting on 14th January 65 people candidates put their names forward and after meeting with each and every one a steering committee of 15 was formed, with many of the remaining candidates serving on sub committees.

Balbriggan Late Night Soccer League22-Feb-14: The Late Night Soccer Programme returned to Balbriggan on Friday Night at Glebe North Footbal Club. The League is organised in conjunction with the FAI and an Garda Síochána for teenagers and young adults and is open to male & female participants from 13 - 15 years and 16 - 21 years. The teams will battle it out over the next 4 weeks to win the coveted prize of a trip to a game with the Garda/FAI.

Balbriggan Cubs Visit Baldonnel Aerodrome22-Feb-14: Balbriggan Cubs 34th &161st visited Baldonnell Aerodrome on Friday 21st February. They group had a fantastic tour of the Aerodrome under the guidance of Sargent Alan Campbell & Rory sGaynor (both former scout leaders in Balbriggan). The cubs placed a neckerchief on a simulator dummy representing the challenge to all scouter this weekend as statues nationwide get decorated in scouting neckerchiefs, as all scouters remember "Founder's Day".

Balbriggan St. Patrick’s Day Parade19-Feb-14: Balbriggan Town Council presents the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade again this year and an exciting parade is promised. The parade will build on the success of the 2013 Parade which saw the introduction of a new start time and a new route. The parade will start at 2:00pm from Drogheda Street and travel southbound via Bridge Street to Dublin Street to finish at the car park opposite St. Peter and Paul’s Church.  A review stand will be in place at Georges Square.

Canaries18-Feb-14: This year Balbriggan Dramatic Society will holding their Annual Production Canaries in the Bracken Court Hotel Balbriggan from Wednesday the 5th of March through to Saturday the 8th March.

 

Canaries by Bernard Farrell is set in the 1980's and is about a group of couples and characters who are away for a break in the Canary Islands and looking forward to plenty of socialising and partying, but things don't always go to plan due to secrets, assumptions and lots of crossed wires.

Balbriggan Cricket Club17-Feb-14: Balbriggan Cricket Club are in the process of installing new practice facilities at their club and are very excited about the new full time coach they will have on board (for the first time!) this coming season.

 

The club is actively seeking new members of all ages to join their growing club. At present the club have 3 Senior teams competing at various levels, 4 Junior teams, two U11 teams and an U13 and U15 team which will all be coached by the full time club coach along with other very experienced club coaches.

The exhibition was completely inspired by and dedicated to the local Balbriggan library. All artwork on show was from local visual artists (painters, sketchers, crafters and photographers) who were touched by how the whole community recently came together in support of the library campaign.

Entitled *Back to the Future*, the exhibition will feature photographs from the renowned Benton/Curtis collection together with a contemporary take on the same photographs. Anti Austerity Alliance Believe Housing Will Be A Key Issue For The Local Elections

Maurice Sweeney14-Feb-14: Issues surroung housing is reaching crisis levels in Balbriggan. It is severely affecting our community and many ordinary people are suffering as a result. According to the central bank there are nearly 150,000 mortgages or 17% of homes are in arrears nationally with the vast majority of these new homes purchased in the last 10 years. Given that thousands of homes were built in the Balbriggan area during the boom and the nature of planning in the area, it is safe to say that the 17% does not apply to the Balbriggan area. There are massive difficulties in the rental sector where rents are rising.

12-Feb-14: Clare Daly ULA TD and Garrett Mullan (Local Independent Candidate) hosted a meeting last night at The Milestone Inn, Balbriggan to call on people to reject what is regarded as the Irish water scam. Irish Water hit the headlines this year when it emerged that EURO 50m had been spent on consultants. Furthermore, it is estimated the total cost of water metering is estimated to be EURO 450m.

Friends of Autism & ADHD12-Feb-14: Friends of Autism and ADHD would like to offer teaching support to children aged between 7 and 12 with Dyslexia. It is hoped to provide low cost group tuition. The aim is to allow parents to take part in the tuition and to get a better understanding of their child and their dyslexia. Subjects covered would include reading, writing and comprehension.

Wavin Lake Balbriggan07-Feb-14: Gormanston & District Anglers (Dublin’s largest Fishery) are waiving their joining fee for new senior members this season. If you would like to spend some time in one of Balbriggan's most beautiful scenic spots at Dublin’s largest all year rainbow trout fishery, then this is the club for you... The wavin lake is set out on approximately 26 acres in a wild life sanctuary and is home to an abundance of wildlife such as swans, herons, otters, king fishers and birds of prey to name but a few.

Ardgillan Parkrun Starts this Week!

Parkrun06-Feb-14: About a year ago Balbriggan roadrunners began looking into bringing a parkrun to Ardgillan Demesne. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5k run or walk in a park and over 300 events take place around the world with over 20 taking place in Ireland North and South. After a year of organising this Saturday will see the inaugural Ardgillan parkrun. It's proven to be a real community effort, after failed attempts to get start up funding through grants the roadrunners asked friends, family and local businesses to help raise the necessary funds and this was a huge success and provided most of the start up funding.

Fingal Adult Education Graduation Ceremony06-Feb-14: It was all smiles and feelings of great achievement at the Fingal Adult Education Service graduation ceremony which was held in Balbriggan's Bracken Court Hotel. 106 students were awarded their FETAC awards, from level 2 to 6 across a range of disciplines. Green Dog Walkers05-Feb-14: Green Dog Walkers (GDW) is a regional programme involving Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dublin City Council, Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, Meath County Council, Wicklow County Council and Drogheda Borough Council. It is a non-confrontational, friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling. Green Dog Walkers is a community based scheme that volunteers in the community can adopt in their own area and promote.

04-Feb-14: Met Eireann have issued flood warnings throughout the country as every area in Ireland that experiences heavy rain could fall victim to flood water. Severe conditions could continue for the next two weeks as weather experts are warning of a ‘storm factory’ over the Atlantic as cold polar air pressing against warm tropical air creates the perfect storm conditions. The west coast of Ireland has been worst hit over the last few weeks and yesterday we brought you photos of the stormy seas in Balbriggan at high tide, however back in 1979 Balbriggan was badly hit when a storm broke through the harbour wall.

Male Volunteers Wanted for Stictly Come Dancing Fundraiser

Strictly Come Dancing04-Feb-14: Merryn is a delightful 4 year old who is fightiing neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Merryn is facing a long road of treatments. With Neuroblastoma, there is a high possibility of relapse and with treatment options in Ireland for cases of relapse being very limited, parents are faced with the huge costs of seeking treatment further afield in Europe or the USA. A Stirctly Come Dancing fundraiser is being organised to raise fund for Merryn. The organisers are looking for MALE dancers to take part (no experience necessary as full training will be given!)

Open Mic Night at The Lounge Balbriggan03-Feb-14: Just over two years ago a local and talented musician Jimmy Brennan had an amazing idea to run an open mic night in the town. He started with just himself and one or two people sitting around the bar. After about 6 months we started to see tourists come down who were on midweek breaks. Every Wednesday we had someone new come in and get up to sing a few songs. We have had people from Belfast to Australians come down and have an amazing night in a relaxed atmosphere..

This year was the first year to host as Progressive Credit Union and we were delighted with the huge interest and participation and we reached capacity with almost 100 participants, and 24 teams. A great day was had by all the students and we have two teams who will now go through to the Stage 2 chapter level later this year.

Victory for Balbriggan Girls in Prestigious Public Speaking Competition

Balbriggan Community College students win public speaking competition01-Feb-14: We are absoluted delighted to announce that three of the Junior Students from Balbriggan Community College have been ajudicated as Best Team in Trinity College's Public Speaking Competition on 1st February 2014. Each student spoke in front of an audience in the Edmund Burke Auditorium in Trinity College for 2-3 minutes on an unseen aspect of two pre allocated topics. With only 30 minutes of unaided preparation the girls put together three speeches which were deemed the best of competition which included six other schools within the Trinity College catchment area.

Balbriggan Cancer Support Group 10k Run/Walk and Half Marathon Launch01-Feb-14: One of the events on the Balbriggan calendar which is growing year by year is the Balbriggan Cancer Support Group 10k Run/Walk & Half Marathon. The 2014 event was officially launched on Thursday night by Gerry Duffy, author, professional speaker and renowned athlete. Gerry Duffy has a sporting CV which has seen him complete some of the hardest endurance challenges on the planet.completed 32 marathons in 32 days in 2010 and is a familiar face at the Balbriggan Cancer Support Group 10k Run/Walk and Half Marathon.

New Season Starting at Balrothery Balbriggan Tennis Club

31-Jan-14: Balrothery Balbriggan Tennis Club is the local community tennis club serving the local population. In the last two years it has revamped its club house facilities including the provision of toilet facilities and has spent considerable money on floodlighting at the courts.

 

The club has introduced a full tennis programme of in-house competition for adults and children. They have introduced DLTC League Tennis back to the club after an absence of ten years, developed local annual competitive fixtures against other Fingal Tennis Clubs and have taken part in the newly formed Fingal Tennis League.

Balbriggan Community Council Formed30-Jan-14: With the abolishment of the Town Councils by the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan this year by and the recent campaign by the people of Balbriggan to stop the Balbriggan Library move a Community Council has been formed to help the people of Balbriggan to 'take back our town'. Over 40 people applied to be on the Community Council and Brigid Dervan and Ann Mehigan took on the difficult task to interview each and every person and decide who should represent the people of Balbriggan on the first ever 'Balbriggan Community Council'

Balbriggan Library Petition Handover to Fingal County Council29-Jan-14: Today saw a group gather outside Balbriggan Library where the last of the petitions were gathered for the handover to Fingal County Council. Brigid Dervan and Ann Mehigan, the two ladies who have been instrumental in the success of this campaign headed off to the Fingal County Council offices in Swords to handover the petitions with the many signatures collected over the last couple of weeks.

Cllr Grainne Maguire Welcomes the Confirmation that Balbriggan Library will Remain in It's Current Location

Cllr Grainne Maguire29-Jan-14: I welcome the confirmation this afternoon from Fingal Co. Co. Acting Manager, Peter Caulfield that the library will remain at its present location on Georges Square at the heart of our town. I am happy that this issue has been resolved and heartened that both the elected representatives and the community can work together with Fingal County Council to get things done. However, I feel very strongly that the civic offices of "Halla an Bhaile" should remain with the people for us to use as a community facility and will work hard to ensure that this is the case.

Bracken Boxing Club Balbriggan Celtic Boxing Challenge26-Jan-14: Balbriggan's Bracken Boxing Club held a Celtic boxing challenge in the Bracken Court Hotel where boxers from the club showed their skill against boxers from visiting clubs, The young boxers, from all the clubs represented on the night showed how hard they had been training and it was a great opportunity for these young sports stars to show off their skills. Well done to all the boxers, from the youngest boxers to the most experienced ones they all gave a show of top class boxing on the night...

Babriggan Youth Service Car Restoration Project

Babriggan Youth Service Car Restoration Project24-Jan-14: A group of youths from Balbriggan's Youth service (Foroige) have undertaken an eight week project which will involve restoring two cars and making them road worthy. The project is aimed to engage with young people while providing the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and skills in car restoration. The first six weeks will see the group working under the instruction of mechanic Robbie O'Sullivan where they will learn valuable skills and the final two weeks they will work with artist to give the cars a unique look and feel.

Ardgillan Talent Show23-Jan-14: Ardgillan Community College put on a fantastic show tonight and students taking to the stage for a great night of entertainment. The stage was a masterpiece of student artwork and Mitchell and the Crew, previous winners, entertained the crowd during the interval The three judges, Miss Conor, Rita Donnellan and Alan Kavanagh had a very tough job in choosing the winners on the night. 1st place went to a well deserved Chelsea Doyle, 2nd place to Aine O'Shaughnessy and Niamh Row and joint 3rd place went to Original School boys and Stephen Sweetman. Well done to all the acts on the night...

Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce23-Jan-14: The Executive of Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce have met urgently to discuss the announcement that Fingal County Council were seeking to relocate the town’s library to Gallen’s Mill, Mill Street, Balbriggan.  No consultation has taken place with Balbriggan Chamber.  The Chamber is disappointed in the manner in which Fingal County Council have announced the proposal and have contacted the Acting County Manager seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the matter.

Cllr O'Leary Calls for €350k Funding to Upgrade Balbriggan Town Centre

22-Jan-14: Cllr Tom OLeary calls for €350k funding to upgrade Balbriggan Town Centre Cllr Tom OLeary has called on Fingal Co Council to apply to the relevant Government Departments and agencies for €350,000 funding for the Public Realm project to upgrade a key entrance to Balbriggan town at Railway street. Local Minister James Reilly is in favour of investing in Balbriggan. This historic street has great potential and the Chamber of Commerce, President Tony Murphy and others have completed a detailed plan to upgrade this street, encourage new business and commence a street market in that area.

Winding Back Time to Remember Paddy Dunphy

21-Jan-14: Two of the particiapnts in the protest against the Balbriggan Library last week were Bernadette and Laura Dunphy. The ladies had a great story to tell as their late father Paddy Dunphy was responsible for keeping the clock on the library tower ticking during the 50's and 60's. Paddy was a car mechanic all his life and was also a well known character in the town. Paddy was paid the princely sum of five pounds per year to ensure that the clock was kept on time for the towns people.

Luke Moriarty Balbriggan21-Jan-14: Prominent Balbriggan businessman Luke Moriarty, has thrown his weight behind the local campaign against moving the local library, calling the proposal 'crazy'. Mr. Moriarty, who helped Fingal County Council build the town hall and library on George's Square says he no longer has anything to do with the building and he opposed the plan. I am calling on Acting County Manager, Peter Caulfield, who knows Balbriggan well, to withdraw this crazy proposal,'' Mr. Moriarty said.

Balbriggan Protest Against Balbriggan Library Move18-Jan-14: The community of Balbriggan rallied together today to show their objections to the proposed move of the Balbriggan Library from it's current location to Gallens Mill. The rain was falling in bucket fulls however this didnt stop the people showing their objections. The library has been on the square for 109 years and the people have shown that they won't take this move lightly and will fight tooth and nail against this proposed move by Fingal County council...

Balbriggan Roadrunners Front Operation Transformation in Ardgillan Demense18-Jan-14: Balbriggan Roadrunners fronted the Operation Transformation run/walk which took place in the grounds of Ardgillan Castle on Saturday 18th January. Rain didn't deter the walkers as they took to the park to complete the 3km walk. Operation Transformation is an Irish health and fitness programme and they have teamed up once again with the Irish Sports Council to organise a these nationwide walking events and encourage everyone to get out and walk.

Quizmaster on the night was Miss Dominica  McKevitt, Head Gardener at Ardgillan Castle who also put the questions together. Young Mother Loses Her Life While Walking with Her Child

17-Jan-14: A young mother in her 30's lost her life today in Balbriggan when a car stuck her while she was out walking with her young child. Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the accident which happened at 12:30pm outside Balbriggan Business Park. Our deepest condolences to the family and we pray for a full recovery for her young child who was injured in the accident and was taken to Temple Street Hospital.

St Teresa's National School Balbriggan New Floor Ceremony16-Jan-14: The Parents Association at St. Teresa's National School in Balbriggan have been hard at work raising money for the last three years to replace the floor in the school. Grainne Maguire16-Jan-14: I attended a Balbriggan Area Meeting this afternoon in County Hall which has just concluded. At this meeting I proposed a motion to ask the County Manager to leave the Balbriggan Carnegie Library in it’s current location and listen to the people of Balbriggan. Unfortunately Cllr. Anne Devitt, Independent proposed an amendment to this motion which was to add to it that we should await further information ...and plans from Fingal County Council officials.This went to a vote and ended with a 6 for the amendment and 5 against.

Remember Us14-Jan-14: This event is a 'Weight Loss Challenge’, and is based on 20 challengers in 4 teams of 5 people, competing to see which team can loose the most weight in 12 weeks. Some of our Parents/volunteers are preparing to sweat off the pounds in the coming weeks to help their team gain victory. The challengers will train in a gym twice weekly to help them notch up vital loss for their team. Mitchell & the Crew Raise €860 for Meals on Wheels12-Jan-14: On Christmas day four young lads Adam Healy, Darragh Pyne, Matthew Redmond and Sean Carey better known as Mitchell and the Crew took part in the ever popular Balbriggan Christmas Day Swim in aid of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels. We are happy to report that the four ambitious young men presented a cheque for €860 to Balbriggan Meals on Wheels as a result of their brave swim. Well done to Adam, Darragh, Matthew and Sean and we are sure to see a lot more of the lads as they progress in their music career...

Wanted: Over 55's for Trinity Research Study

Neil Neuro-enhancement for independent lives09-Jan-14: Joanna McHugh (PhD, C. Psychol) is a postdoctoral researcher based in Trinity College Dublin and is currently looking for over 55's to get involved in a mealtime study. The study will investigate the provision of mealtimes as well as social support for older adults living alone in Dublin. For this study they Joanna is recruiting individuals over the age of 60 who are living alone and may be at risk of social isolation.

Sports Capital Grants Application Process To Begin Next Week

Deepartment of Transport, Tourism and Sport09-Jan-14: Fine Gael Councillor Tom O'Leary today (Thursday) highlighted that applications for funding under the Sports Capital Programme will be taken next week. “A new €40 million fund for important sports capital projects has been announced by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring. The Sports Capital Programme is the main channel of Government support for developing sports facilities and purchasing sports equipment for sports clubs a nd organisations across Ireland,” Cllr O'Leary explained.

Have Your Say on Proposal for Naul Road, Chapel Street, Balbriggan

04-Jan-14: Fingal County Council is planning to put traffic calming in place in the Naul Rd/Chapel Street area of Balbriggan. A technical drawing of the proposal is on display in County Hall Swords and Balbriggan Library from Tuesday 31st December 2013 to Tuesday 28th January 2014. Members of the public are invited to tell us in writing what they think of this proposal before close of business on Friday 7th February 2014.

O'Dwyers GAA & Balbriggan RFC Present Cheques to SVP

02-Jan-14: Back in December O'Dwyers GAA club and Balbriggan Rugby Football Club held a charity compromised rules game in Balbriggan RFC. The proceeds were presented to St. Vincent de Paul. Only the bravest came out to support the teams as the winds howled around the pitch however the teams managed to raise €575. Well done to both teams and the supporters. Also, the minis section of Balbriggan RFC hand over a cheque for €600 euro to St Vincent de Paul. This was raised at the minis rugby blitz in December.
