Brave Nikita Leads the Way on Research Drive Source:

A YOUNG Balbriggan
boy who has been told by doctors he will not live beyond his teenage years is
working along with his family to raise money for research into the rare genetic
disease that has taken over his body. The family of nine year old Balbriggan boy
Nikita Pilipenko are raising money for the research into the mysterious but deadly
Sanfilippo Syndrome. Nikita was diagnosed with the rare condition at the age of

Slippery Conditions and Chimney Fires Keep Fire Service

| A house at Seaview, Laytown went on fire on December
28th and this was attended by fire personnel from Drogheda and Balbriggan. On
the same day, there were fires at a car in Tullyallen and a number of car accidents

Motorists Urged to Drive Carefully Source:

The M1
between junction four in Donabate and junction six in Balbriggan
is very icy. It has not been gritted, and there have been a number of collisions,
including a five car crash. The city bound lanes of the
N4 have been closed to traffic at Palmerstown due to ice. Pedestrians
are also being advised to take care. One Dublin hospital - St Vincent's - is reporting
an upsurge in the number of people presenting themselves to their A&E department

Bogus Caller Warning in New Wave of House Raids Source:

A LOCAL authority has
warned householders to beware of burglars posing as council officials after another
spate of thefts. Fingal County Council issued the warning after residents in north
county Dublin were robbed by thieves pretending they were there to carry out water
maintenance. It is the second area to be targeted after a wave of similar incidents
in Donnybrook earlier this month. In the latest thefts, bogus council workers
called to doors in Balbriggan, Swords and Blanchardstown.
A spokesperson said victims had reported complaints to the council and gardai.

New Traffic Lights and Wider Exit Necessary at Junction Source:

A
CALL has gone out to construct new traffic lights at Balrothery Village and the
R132, main Balbriggan Road junction following a fatal accident there last week.
A teacher at Balbriggan Community School, John Bailey, lost his life in the accident
when his motorcycle collided with a car. Dublin North Fianna
Fáil TD, Michael Kennedy, has now called for work to commence immediately
on traffic lights at Balrothery Village and the R132 main Balbriggan road junction,
following the tragic accident. In addition, Deputy Kennedy has called for a two
lane exit from Balrothery Village onto the main road. Read

Teacher John Sorely Missed by so Many

WE will miss him sorely for the rest of our lives'
- the words that summed up the feelings of hundreds of mourners gathered in Balbriggan
last Friday to remember the life of an extraordinary man who was killed in a tragic
road accident. John Bailey, a teacher at Balbriggan Community
College, was pronounced dead at the scene of the horrific accident which claimed
his life when his motorbike collided with a car around 8am on Wednesday, December

Council to Continue With 'Defect' Probe Source:

THE council
is continuing to investigate claims from a number of residents on a Balbriggan
estate that defects found in their homes amount to a breach of building regulations
by the developer of the estate. A number of residents in Martello Estate in Balbriggan
have been pursuing the issue for some time and the council has undertaken to investigate
their claims. The building control section at Fingal County Council has updated
local councillors on the investigation which has so far determined that there
has been no breach of building regulations in terms of the buildings resistance

POPULAR
community website balbriggan.net has launched its Christmas DVD, featuring the
late great Jack Benton. The disc features almost an hour and a half of interviews
with Jack, ably assisted by his long time friend, Joe Curtis. Jack
agreed to create this year's Balbriggan.net DVD only three weeks before his untimely
death. Tony Healy from balbriggan.net had suggested a new format this year whereby
Jack and Joe would narrate as each photograph appeared rather than just the repetition

Sargent Praises Balbriggan Volunteers Source:

TD and Junior Minister, Trevor Sargent, speaking at the Balbriggan Community Policing
Forum, thanked a group of local volunteers for their work in combating drug abuse
in the area. Commenting on the origins of the Balbriggan Awareness of Drugs (BAD)
group, he said “the women who were the catalyst for BAD being established
are the real heroines today”. He went on to further praise the work of the
local Gardaí and to point out the important role the Balbriggan Community
Policing Forum plays in identifying and addressing drug-related issues in the

Balbriggan stun Birr with Whitewash Source:

BALBRIGGAN
played their best rugby since September when they comprehensively beat Birr to
go top of Division 3B – a point ahead of North Meath who went down in a
close encounter with Arklow. Having lost to Birr back in November, the seasiders
had something to prove and they did it in some style. What was the difference?
Well, talisman Con Casey, returning for his first game after a nine-week absence,
got his backs running smoothly, and in the pack the addition of Alan Egan to the
second row has brought a stability to the Balbriggan scrum.

two weeks ago. The fish took 25 minutes to land and well done to Paul for returning
