20 years on… The 20th Anniversary of 1999 Balbriggan Golf Club Ladies Team

September 18, 2019 0

Imelda O’Shea & Mariann Griffin organised a reunion to mark the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of 1999
Balbriggan Golf Club Ladies Team All Ireland Fourball winners on 11th September 2019. The 1999 Lady Captain Maura Faughnan remembers the excitement created around the Club as the Ladies progressed into each round. They were a super Team & Maura was so proud to be Lady Captain that year as the Ladies brought home the All Ireland Pennant. Maura also recalls that there some celebrating.

balbriggan_golf_club_SIGNTeam Captain Imelda version of events . The Competition was known as the Ulster Fourball, today it is the Revice Active.

The Format then was 3 Pairs, each pair had to to have one player under 20 H/C & one over 20 H/C.

We had terrific supporters from the Club & the excitement was electric.. The two Captains Maura Faughnan & Tom Walsh were there to congratulate the Ladies as they were presented with the winners Pennant. it was back to Balbriggan for celebrations. It was a long Summer, all the work paid off …. and we also got new Club Jumpers.

Sandy Forsyth recalls how young the team were, mostly in their 20s, 30’s & 40’s. possible even innocent, but
this did not in anyway intimidate this young team as we knocked out opponents along the way. The Trip away to the Final in Athlone Golf Club was like a School Trip. The team set off without any expectations. Balbriggan Golf Club were certainly the underdogs on the day, but with the management skills of Imelda & Marian making the best decision in the pairings on the day the team excelled & of course won.

Evelyn Tolan remembers when the Team had beaten Milltown Golf Club in Malahide they were now in the
Finals. Marian Griffin nearly had a “Clippo ” when it was discovered that Nicola Campbell had a Holiday
booked to Greece & would not be around for the Final. There was some talk about flying Nicola home for
the Finals but common sense prevailed and the team was jigged aournd and new players drafted in.

Several practice rounds involving many trips up the M50 & M4 motorway. there was one occasion when the hired bus broke down outside Swords & the Team had to Push Start the bus to get back to Balbriggan where Christy had the bar open & sambos ready. We practically knew every blade of grass on the M4.

The Final 11th Sept 8.30 am start. The team went to Athlone the day before for a little practice and then for most of us it was an early night. Rumor has it that Marian Griffin talked all night & even made Tea at 3.00am !!!!

Dressed in our new attire of Polo Shirts bearing the logo Ulster Bank Fourball Leinster Winners 1999 we exchanged pleasantries with our opposition Galway Bay GC . Teed Off & one by one we claimed our matches & were victorious.
