Annual Summerfest Charity football Match 30th May 2018 K.O. @ 7.00pm

May 28, 2018 0

The annual Summerfest Charity football match is taking place this Wednesday coming 30th of May in Glebe North at 7pm. The game is traditionally played between a local Balbriggan side against a team of local Garda, and this year will be no different. This will be the sixth installment of this fixture with the Garda leading three wins to two. The Garda won the first three years and the local Balbriggan team have stormed back to win the last two and will be looking to win this year’s match to tie the series three each.

This is very much a family event and we would like to see as many people as possible at the football match. After the presentation of medals and trophies everyone is welcome to come down to the Harvest Bar where refreshments will be served.

The foundation of this event was built on raising money for nominated charities/funds. Last year the match was in aid of Balbriggan Cancer Support Group and was a very successful event. This year the game will be played in aid of Remember Us.

Remember us was founded in 1998 by Nora Roban providing a social outlet for youths and adults with special needs and also providing support for their families. There are now approximately 240 families registered throughout Fingal and the surrounding areas. They have acquired new premises which is located in Balbriggan Retail Park that is currently being fitted out. The new building is 10,000sq ft and once completed will have state of the art facilities for their group.

On talking to Nora she said “We are extremely delighted and grateful to be chosen this year as the nominated charity as these funds will go a very long way in providing future support for the families and the development of our new premises. These are extremely exciting times considering where we began and where we are now. With this in mind we would like to thank you all for your continuing support throughout the year and the future years to come”

Councillor Grainne Maguire said “In our 10th year of Balbriggan Summerfest it is great that Remember us are celebrating their 20th anniversary. It is fantastic that we are marking this monumental occasion with a football match and that the whole community of Balbriggan comes together in support. We hope we can raise as much funds per previous years if not more”.

Darrell Mooney, Manager of the local Balbriggan side said “This is something that I look forward to every year. It is always a great occasion when the local Balbriggan team take on the Garda to help raise funds for a worth charity/fund. In previous years we have raised money for Tanya McCabe 2013/2014, Balbriggan Cancer Support Group 2015, Adam Dunne 2016, C J McCardle 2017. I am continuously overwhelmed with the support as the years go on when the locals of Balbriggan come out in the droves to donate to all these worthwhile charities/funds. Four to five times a year, I coach on a Football for All with Remember Us facilitated by the FAI. This is a group that is very close to my heart and to have them nominated this year as the charity is fantastic for me personally.

On behalf of the Balbriggan local team I would like to thank Councillor Grainne Maguire and the Summerfest team, the local Garda, Junior Reilly and the Glebe North Committee for the use of their pitch and their excellent facilities, Supervalu and The Harvest for sponsoring the Charity Game and of course Kim and Joe of Balbriggan.info for their ongoing coverage of the event”.
