The first Ever History seminar of Ardgillan Castle – ‘Warts and All’ will take place on Saturday 17th May, 2014. The workshop will consist of lectures on four diverse and fascinating topics, all of which have something in common – Ardgillan Castle.

|10.15 – 11.15||‘And Many Inhabitants’ – Cromwell in Ireland. Conventional wisdom is challenged.
Myths are finally dispelled by controversial author Tom Reilly. Tom’sCromwell An Honourable Enemy caused quite a sensation and his upcoming Cromwell was Framed: Ireland 1649 is expected to do the same. Tom is a local historian from Drogheda, has published nine books and is the Manager of Ardgillan Castle.

|11.45 – 12.45||Admeasured – William Petty’s Down Survey Deconstructed by Frank Prendergast.
Frank is a geodetic surveyor and archaeologist at the College of Engineering and Built Environment, DIT. His background uniquely enables him to explore the context, methods and artistry that resulted in the first ever national mapping of Ireland – an achievement that would not be bettered until the establishment of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland in 1824.

|1.45 – 2.45||‘Our Native Army’ Volunteers, Militia, Yeomanry, & Fencibles – 1715 – 1803 by Aidan Herron.
Aidan is a retired Primary School Principal with a life-long interest in history. He lectured (part time) in the methodology of teaching history at post primary level in Mater Dei Institute of Education. He is currently Secretary of the Board of Directors of Ardgillan Castle in addition to enjoying the role of guide there.
|2.45 – 3.45||Ardgillan:The Creation and Evolution of an Estate by Roisín Halligan.
Roisín is a Local History BA student at NUI Maynooth and has thus far graduated with a Certificate and Diploma (Hons) in Local History. She hopes to complete her BA degree shortly. Roisin has a particular interest in Irish historic houses and their demesnes, and in particular how they have changed and are utilised in the twenty-first century.
