Balbriggan Golf Club celebrate 75th Anniversary

Balbriggan Golf Club is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. G. L. “Gerry” McGowan the founder whose vision and driving force led to the course being officially opened on the 6th of August 1945 . To celebrate an exhibition match took place between four of Ireland’s leading Professionals Harry Bradshaw, the Irish Champion, Adam W Whiston, Leinster Champion and Moran Cup winner, S McGealy, of Skerries Golf Club, and William (Bill) Kinsella of Skerries Golf Club who contributed in no small way to the layout of the new course. The 9-hole course was highly regarded by many visiting golfers and was the perfect foundation for the 18-hole Championship golf course it is today.

balbriggan-golf-club-logoThe golf course has been developed over the years and is today one of Dublin’s finest championship golf courses its finished layout is the work of highly respected golf course designer Eddie Connaughton. His design makes great use of the natural golf course terrain. The golf course receives streams of positive comments from visitors. Feedback from Ireland’s top amateurs who played in our Senior and Junior scratch Cup on the 19th July has been overwhelming. Players found the course to be a good challenge, were very impressed by the quality of the greens, the presentation of our course, the reception and the quality of food in our clubhouse. Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley who visited on that day to watch his son Killian competing wrote a letter to the Captain saying that he was really impressed with the quality of the golf course not just in the design but also the condition.

Golf in Balbriggan is not just for the serious low handicap golfer. We have a greater number of higher handicapped golfers than low handicapped golfers in our club and they really enjoy our facilities. There is a great club spirit in evidence with so many members giving freely of their time to work on committees and also volunteering for work on the course and around the clubhouse. Our Head Greenkeeper Peter who is a highly skilled operator and his team do a fantastic job maintaining our greens and course to a very high standard.

The Balbriggan Golf Club experience is about so much more than golf. The true heart of the club rests in the members, guests and the great comradery and friendship that exists throughout the club. Wonderful social nights take place in a relaxed atmosphere. You will be met with a warm welcome in the Pro shop from Club Professional Nigel Howley and his team. They offer green fees at very competitive rates. After your game, come into the modern and comfortable clubhouse for a drink and a bite to eat provided by our caterer Stephen Carroll.
