Balbriggan Needs Family Resource Centre

There are 109 communities supported through the Child and Family Agency’s Family and Community Services Resource Centre Programme providing services and supports to local communities nationwide. Balbriggan with the youngest population in the country has no family resource centre, says Murphy.

Family Resource centres deliver universal services to families in disadvantaged areas across the country based on a life-cycle approach. The aim is to combat disadvantage and improve the functioning of the family unit.  Each Family Recourse Centre operates autonomously working inclusively with individuals, families, communities, and both statutory and non-statutory agencies.

The nearest centre to Balbriggan is Coolock or Ballymun. The impact of lack of services for families in the Balbriggan area is having a negative effect on the whole community.

This is also compounded by the lack of youth workers in Balbriggan.  There is only one senior youth officer with no frontline youth workers. Volunteers are picking up the mantle but this is unsustainable without realistic support and resources. This situation cannot continue, Murphy says.

There are only three Cius drug and alcohol task force workers to cover Rush, Lusk, Skerries, Naul, Garristown and Balbriggan.

There needs to be a sea change in attitude towards Balbriggan from all government agencies immediately says Murphy
