Balbriggan Rugby Club is Expanding

September 20, 2014 0

In recent years like many other clubs around the country, Balbriggan RFC has experienced dwindling adult playing numbers due to the recession and emigration. Thankfully things have changed for the better over the last couple of years. There are now two adult men’s teams. The 1st XV team are playing in the Leinster League while the 2nd XV team are playing in the local area McGee league Cup. Last year the 1st team won the Jenkinson Cup and got to the final of the McGee cup.

This has proven to be extremely popular with over 20 women registered in the last month. Many of the players have never played before so training has been focusing on getting them to learn the game and enjoyment.  They will be playing in the Leinster Development League for the 2014-15 season. Matches will start in early October.

The club hope to have a permanent dedicated professional coach within the next couple of weeks for the ladies team to ensure their skill levels and fitness are maximized. The club has high hopes for the ladies.  They will also be taking part in a blitz in Ashbourne on the 20th of September.

With all these extra teams now training and playing regularly including over 150 minis and youths it is lucky that the club have invested heavily in the state of the art facilities over the last number of years to cope with the popularity of the game in the town.

Training for the adult men and women is on every Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and give it a try. Contact Leigh O’Toole by email at or on 085 842 2094.
