As part of this years Balbriggan Summerfest celebrations, the Balbriggan Maritime Museum Committee & Balbriggan Chamber of commerce held a ceremony to unveil a memorial dedicated to the Ship wreck “Belle Hill” and All Souls lost at sea off our local coast on Sunday 2nd June 2013.

At the sailors grave the memorial was unveiled and this was followed by a short multi-denominational ceremony remembering all those who were lost at sea. Barbara Curtis told the story of the Belle Hill a ship that sunk off the coast back in 1875.The weather had been bad and the ship had been driven bu ESE gales onto the coastline near Balbriggan. Today the cairns of stones near Newhaven Bay recalls the seamen who lost their lives in Balbriggan’s worst maritime disaster

A place of beauty worth a visit and remember to bring a stone from the beach to add to the cairn…
