Balscadden National School welcomed the Irish Coastguard to the school on Monday, 27th May, 2019. The visit was arranged by Philip O’Neill, a parent of children in the school, himself an Irish Coastguard volunteer. The helicopter touched down at 9.30am in the field of local farmer Richard Cannon, a field that is adjacent to the school grounds.
Additional Irish Coastguard crew members arrived in advance of the visit in two crew cab SUVs and an ATV vehicle to prepare the field for landing. Following the landing of the helicopter the pupils of Balscadden NS were divided up into various stations where they learned about the work of the Irish Coastguard. They learned about the helicopter and the equipment that the Irish Coastguard use on the rescue missions.
The visit concluded with the take off of the helicopter from the field much to the delight of the all the onlooking children.
