Council Fails Again to Consult With its Citizens

Local Green Party Representative Joe O’Brien has hit out at Fingal County Council for failing again to consult with the citizens of Fingal in relation to the planned reduction in the library service.

He stated:

We all understand that economic times are tight but that does not mean you do not consult with the public and cut away regardless. This kind of approach is only compounding people’s anger at the library cuts. The people who use the library during the hours that are proposed to be cut should have been consulted before any plan was drawn up. I think then the Council would have realised that it is not just a question of people visiting at a different time – this is not possible for some people. Nor is it possible for many people to visit a library in a neighbouring town when their own one is closed.

There has been a serious lack of service user consultation and with a view to addressing this I have taken it upon myself to organise public meetings in Rush and Balbriggan next week for a number of reasons:

  • To provide a forum for people to explain how the cuts will impact upon them
  • To provide an opportunity for Fingal County Council to explain directly to the public the plans in more detail and the reasoning behind them
  • Together to explore alternatives to cut opening hours

I hope these meetings will offer a cross section of people a chance to air their views and concerns but I also hope there will be a constructive approach by all parties at the meeting.
