FETAC Student’s Create Wonderful Garden

A group of students on a FETAC Community Participation Course with Fingal Adult Education Centre in Balbriggan set about looking for a suitable project in the Balbriggan area. Their goal was to carry out a project that would benefit the community and give them a sense of achievement and an opportunity to learn something new. Together with their teacher Fiona Kavanagh they identified an area in the town, at the junction of Drogheda Street and Brecan Close, which was badly in need of a facelift.

As it was quite a large project they needed a lot of help with the planning and preparation. Balbriggan Town Council kindly offered both financial and practical help. Ray Nugent of Balbriggan Town Council played a very significant part in bringing together and planning the project with the group. He spent a lot of time with the group teaching them and helping them plan the project. The group also went on a field trip to Plant Market in Blakes Cross where they met with Margaret O’Brien who also gave them very useful advice on planting and planning.

After a few weeks of hard work this project has now been completed and the transformation is superb. The group found this project very rewarding and have learned a lot during the process. They hope that this project will be enjoyed by all of the community for many years to come.

The group comprised of Mark Kearney, Bernie McDonald, Chris McDonnell, Padraic Doran, Michael Laverty, Vicky Wade, Ann Hayden, Mary Clare Walsh (Reach Co-ordinator), Fiona Kavanagh (Teacher), Ray Nugent (Balbriggan Town Council).
