Fingal County Council has launched its 3rd Irish Language Scheme 2018-2021. The objectives of this third Scheme are to build on the progress achieved in the provision of quality services to our Irish-speaking customers. Among the commitments contained in it are the provision of all forms in Irish, a bilingual website and the promotion of the Language through Irish Language events and through Social Media. Fingal staff have been identified who can provide a service in Irish, and they are assisted in this by the provision of Irish Language courses. The full scheme is available on the Council website www.fingal.ie.

The scheme was prepared following a public consultation process, and in consultation with the elected members and Coiste na Gaeilge, including a presentation to the meeting of the Council on May 14. The Minister for Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht has confirmed the scheme with a commencement date of May 28, 2018 and it shall remain in force for a period of three years from this date.

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid commented: “Fingal County Council is committed to the provision of quality service through the Irish language and to the promotion of Irish within the Council and the County. I am committed to supporting this through staff training and the many events ‘As Gaeilge’ which are organised and facilitated in our Libraries, Community and Art Centres, in County Hall, and at our various festivals.”

Irish Officer Bernie Kelly commented: “As an Irish Language enthusiast myself, I am delighted to see how strong the Language is in the Fingal area, with a large number of children attending Gaelscoileanna and Gaelcholáistí, and many Irish language activists in the community. Through this scheme Fingal County Council management and staff will continue to work to meet the needs of this growing community.”

In celebration of Bliain na Gaeilge Fingal County Council has organised and promoted many events throughout the year. A variety of events take place in our Branch Libraries with visiting authors and performers, catering for both children and adults. As part of our commitment to the promotion of Irish, there will be a Pop up Gaeltacht in the Fingal Village at Flavours of Fingal in Newbridge House, Donabate, on June 23 and 24.

For information on future events follow Fingal County Council on social media, see our website www.fingal.ie or contact your local Library. All Irish queries can be emailed to eolas@fingal.ie.
