Foroige BandFest February 2011

The Balbriggan Youth Service (Foróige) Band Night at the Milestone saw half a dozen bands perform brilliantly to 170 enthusiastic punters. Most genres were covered bar the currently ubiquitous R n B. Daze Boyz, Demented, What About Us? Antelope, Gun Runner, The Notas and DJ Clean Up all performed on the night, with the proceeds going to the Balbriggan Youth Service to fund future projects. The bands enthusiastically covered Heavy metal, Rap, Rock and Pop to keep the crowd swaying and dancing over the two hour duration of the gig. The Band Night is part of the process of involving young people in something positive other than lurking around the seaside town. Giving teens projects and skills can only help with their development and is proving to be a hit not just with the participants, but with the community in general, evidenced by such great support for the efforts of the youngsters.

Sharon Cumiskey from the Balbriggan Youth service said “The young people of Balbriggan had absolutely nothing to do in their free time and they came to us , asking for our help to organise something for them. We are hopeful that we will be able to do a similar band based event every six weeks or so, to showcase the talent which these young people undoubtedly have, and we hope to shine a light on as many young bands as possible”.

The youth service would also like to thank the 16 community volunteer adults who so generously gave up their time on Thursday night to help supervise the event. – Bob McKenzie –
