Ghlór na Mara on the Cusp of Glory

March 8, 2019 0

Gaelscoil Coláiste Ghlór na Mara are standing on the threshold of greatness as they bid to win their first ever Leinster soccer title this coming Thursday the 14th of March.  The school still in its infancy was founded in 2013 which makes their attempts to be crowned Leinster Champions all the more impressive. Although Glór na Mara’s numbers may be small they lack nothing in spirit.

The school have put a huge emphasis on extracurricular activities over the past few years with a primary focus on GAA and Basketball. As the school has developed the staff of Glór na Mara have looked to provide the students with as broad a selection of extracurricular activities as possible and aim to be competitive in everything they do. This year was their maiden voyage into schools soccer as the school entered their first ever under 16s soccer team which is comprised of students from first, second and third year.

In more hope than expectation the school donned the red and white in their inaugural soccer match. However it soon became apparent to those involved that Glór na Mara were here to do more than just make up the numbers. Comprehensive wins over Colaiste Clavin and Terrenure CS gave the team some much needed self belief and a passage to the quarter final was secured. Merely fielding a team in the competition could have been deemed as progress but this talented bunch had eyes on bigger accolades.

Their fairytale journey to the final was not without drama and it took a stoppage time equalizer in the quarter final to spark a Lazarus like recovery to force a penalty shoot-out. Glór na Mara held their nerve in the spot kicks to see off Donahies CS and book a place in the semi finals.

The semi final proved another enthralling affair, hotly contested with fellow Gaelscoil Coláiste Mhuire, Cabra. Glór na Mara made early dominance count and raced into the lead but complacency allowed Colaiste Mhuire back into the game and a late goal tested their nerves further but they managed to see the game out 3-2 and book a date with destiny in this year’s final.

Glór na Mara will do battle with Killinarden Community School in Thursday’s showpiece. The match is fixed for 12 O’Clock in Stella Maris Football Club, Drumcondra. So if you find yourself in Drumcondra on Thursday next cast an eye out for the red and white horde as they bid to bring the cup back to Balbriggan.
