Launch of Balbriggan Meals on Wheels Dinner ClubNovember 6, 2016 ADMIN 0
Balbriggan Meals on Wheels has commenced a new Dinner Club as an addition to the organisation’s regular meals delivery to people who are not in a position to provide meals for themselves. The need for this extra service was identified in consultation with the Health Service Executive, as a means of helping to keep clients active and involved in the community by giving them an opportunity to be collected and transported to the Order of Malta hall in Hampton Street every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This provides a chance to get out of the house, socialise and participate in group activities.
The project will be run on a pilot basis for six months and if successful, efforts will be made to continue it as a permanent service.
Speaking at the launch of the Dinner Club, Meals on Wheels Chairman Brendan Ingoldsby said that, having been operating for over 40 years, Balbriggan Meals on Wheels was in danger of becoming a victim of its own success. Because of the charity’s high visibility and reputation in the community, it was sometimes taken for granted, with people assuming that Meals on Wheels “have loads of money”. He explained however, that the Dinner Club pilot project had been made possible through a combination of lottery funds, an unexpected legacy and a grant from the Carvill Charitable Trust. As all of these were once-off sources of funding, the charity would have to hunt elsewhere for future finance.
The Chairman thanked the HSE and also the many individuals, organisations and corporate sponsors whose financial support has ensured the success of the service to date and on whom the organisation will continue to depend for its survival into the future. He paid tribute to the co-ordinator, Helen Davis, for her successful management of the service; also to the staff, volunteer drivers, helpers, kitchen workers and events committee.
The organisation is particularly grateful to the Order of Malta and the Flexibus service who provide the transport for the Dinner Club.
