Morton International Games launched by Deputy Mayor at Morton Stadium

The Morton International Games were launched by Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire, Minister of State for Sport and Tourism, Brendan Griffin TD, and CEO of Athletics Ireland Hamish at Morton Stadium in Santry last week ahead of the commencement of the games on Thursday, 19 July.

Irish international athletes Brian Gregan (Clonliffe Harriers) and Siofra Clerigh-Buttner (DSD) also attended the launch. Both athletes will compete on 19 July in the international Meet at the Morton Stadium, Santry.

Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Grainne Maguire said: “Training for all of the competitions have required huge dedication, hard work and the development of their talent. Sport is so important to the people of Fingal and is exciting and inspiring to see Irish athletes competing in international games while at home. I would of course like to wish all of the athletes the very best of luck with the games but I would also like to congratulate them on competing in such a significant event.”

Speaking at the launch Minister Griffin said: “This year’s Morton Games promises to be another wonderful night of athletics and a fantastic opportunity for the Irish public to see some top class athletes in action. It is also a great chance for our athletes to test themselves against international opposition in preparation for the European Athletics Championships which take place in Berlin in August. I wold like to congratulate everyone involved in organising this prestigious event on the Irish sporting calendar and I hope everyone has an exciting and enjoyable evening.”

Morton Games now in its eighth year as an annual international track and field Meet will feature Ireland’s top athletes, in addition to Brian Gregan and Siofra Clerigh-Buttner the Meet will feature Ireland’s fastest woman Phil Healy, Sean Tobin in the Morton Mile, John Travers and Stephen Scullion in the 5000.

Confirmed international athletes participating in the Meet include 2016 world indoor 800 champion Boris Berian (USA), Crystal Emmanuel (CAN), a two time Olympian and finalist in both the 2017 world championships and Diamond League. Olympic high jump finalist Alyx Treasure (CAN) and Ryan Gregson (AUS) a 2016 Olympic 1500 finalist.

The Meet will feature athletes from over thirty countries, from all five continents with in excess of 100 international athletes competing including approximately 20 Olympians.

Morton Games on Thursday July 19 commences with a pre programme at 6.30 p.m. and the international athletics then commencing at 7.30 p.m.
