O’Dwyers GAA Club Balbriggan Capuchin 2020 AppealOctober 17, 2020 ADMIN 0
This time last year, O’Dwyers GAA Club launched a Help Feed the Homeless Initiative in support of the work done by the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin in feeding those who had no home, no bed, no money, no hope. With the help of the people of Balbriggan and a number of local businesses we were able to send 4 van loads of supplies to the Capuchin Centre last Christmas week.
It’s strange how things change and people forget. Pre Covid-19, our news bulletins and documentaries were already taken up with daily statistics growing each week, denoting the number of homeless and the number of rough sleepers. In the space of one week in March, these people fell through the cracks, into what seems like oblivion, never to be mentioned again.
But the poor, the destitute, and the homeless are always among us. The big difference for them and for their ability to survive is that, since the first lockdown in March, footfall in Dublin has diminished, while the now-preferred contact method of payment makes begging almost impossible. Added to this, the closure of /restrictions on many restaurants and cafés means the homeless have a reduced opportunity of receiving excess food or even finding a hot spot in a café to sit over a cup of coffee.
And to compound the difficulties, with self-distancing now a way of life, and people’s incomes at risk, charities are finding it harder and harder this year to feed and clothe the homeless.
This is why charities like the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People are so important. They give more than food, more than warmth. They put the human back into humanity. Who wants to be a statistic anyway?
