O’Dwyers U16 Girls Win U16 Division 3 Championship Final

Sunday 6th November O’Dwyers U16’s played against Westmanstown Gaels. Fergus O’Carroll’s runaway Div 3 winners had remained unbeaten throughout the league campaign, a feat that could only be matched by a similar run in the Championship, and they didn’t disappoint.

As with the u15’s, the pre-season target was a good run in both league & cup, and as it turned out, both were achieved with the minimum of fuss. In fact in many of the season’s games they routed the opposition. The ethos of hard work, defending as a unit and accurate finishing, with forwards feeding off the steady supply from midfield, seemed too much for many of the opposition teams and so it proved in the Championship decider in Ringsend.

The O’Dwyers girls, some of whom had played in Saturday’s u15 final, were still nursing wounded pride from the previous day and there was a quiet air of determination to put things back on track. In fact there were a few observers who expected a ‘backlash’ and sure enough the girls were off the blocks from the starting whistle, a start that seemed to take Westmanstown by surprise, and from which, they never really recovered. The half-time scoreline of 5-5 to 0-1 was a refection of the total dominance of an O’Dwyers team who were determined to get back to their own high standards, and who ran out comfortable 8-8 to 2-5 winners.
