Official Opening of the Remember Us New Base in Balbriggan

March 26, 2019 0

Remember Us was set up by Nora Roban in 1998. When asked why, Nora replied “The answer is simple. My son Paul has special needs. It is absolutely vital for people with special needs to develop their social skills and self-esteem early in life, to help integrate into society. I instinctively knew that without developing this side of his life he would always feel inadequate and isolated from society. This would inevitably lead to even greater problems as he got older. After years of searching and failing to find such a place, I decided to set up Remember Us, for Paul and for other young people like him.

remember_us_special_needs_group_144x97What a very special day it was on Friday 22nd March as after 4 years of fundraising and sourcing grants etc we officially opened our new club house. Over 300 people attended the event and the atmosphere was electric. There were tears of joy around the room. A massive thanks to Rebecca Grimes actress from Fair City for coming along to help our members cut the ribbon and cake. The audience heard first hand what the club means to our members and their families as the many speakers told their story.

Volunteers also spoke why they volunteer with us. Gráinne Maguire Deputy Mayor of Fingal also spoke along with Brian Howard from Progressive Credit Union who are our premium patrons and Nellie Hovarth from Dublin Rural Leader who provided a grant towards the fit out of our new clubhouse . Cllr Tony Murphy also spoke on the day. Families and invited guests were blown away with the size and what facilities we have. This week coming our members will experience first hand what it is going to be like in their new clubhouse as all our club nights are starting from Monday.

We had another special guest make an appearance on the day. A big thank you to Charlie Rogan for bringing out the Sam Maguire Cup to the event. As a Mayo woman it was great to get a hold of it! To end the day families had organized a surprise for Nora “This is your Life “ book and slide show and all the families had got to get her and presented me with a golden ticket for a family holiday to the value of €2,500.

Flowers were presented to Anne, Audrey and Jean. Thanks also goes to our magician on the day Denis Wiggles, our DJ Paul, Kashia from Photo Studio Balbriggan, Fabian from Faydinkum Studios, KMR catering Balbriggan Golf club, Maura Mc Kenna, volunteer and local ICA lady for making the fab cakes.

From the bottom of our members and their families hearts thank you to each and every one of you who have supported us over the years and made this dream of our new club house come true…
