People making a difference in our community!

April 7, 2019 0

Helping others and making a difference in the community is what helps to make the community a better place. One person at a time, one day at a time, and one project at a time, you can make a difference that will leave a lasting impact.  Today, we popped down to Quay street car park to see the great work that Eoghan the tidy town volunteer had made to the Bracken river.

Eoghan  has been creating small stone weirs in the river to make it more suitable for fish and fowl. Eoghan has single handedly moved tonnes and tonnes of rocks and the difference is quite remarkable.   The river seems more alive and the water is flowing like a chorus.

While were were admiring the work on the river we spotted a lady tending to one of the flower beds. We popped over to say hello and met volunteer Anne. Anne was creating a bee friendly herb garden, using lavender, thyme, rosemary and some native wild flowers that are loved by bees. Ireland’s Bees are in danger and more than half of our bee species have experienced substantial declines since the 1980s so this small bee garden will actually help with our native bees.

We all have an important day-to-day role to play in addressing problems and in making life better in our communities. In other words, there are lots of ways for all of us to make a difference and our communities would be better if we all did a little more. Eoghan and Anne didn’t wait to be asked they took the initiative and are making a difference.

A big thank you to Eoghan and Anne for their hard work and resolve. Volunteering takes on many forms so a big thank you to all the volunteers in the town who take time out of their busy schedules, the coaches in the many sporting clubs, Balbriggan Tidy Towns, supporting organisations like Balbriggan Cancer Support Group and the Balbriggan Lourdes Pilgrimage group to name but a few.  Thank you for helping make our town a better place.
