Remember Us Welcomes 2013!January 16, 2013 ADMIN 0
Remember Us is ready to kick off 2013 with a bang! We are looking forward to reuniting with our members at Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs panto in the TLT in Drogheda on the 27th of January. There are many exciting activities and outings lined up for the next couple of months including Indoor Adventure Golf, Wall Climbing, Bowling, Cookery, Arts and Crafts and Drama, to name but a few!
There will also be family respite trips organised for February, April, June and September. 2013 will also mark the 15th Anniversary of Remember us and to celebrate, there will be a party held in the Bracken Court Hotel on April 27th. We look forward to seeing as many friendly faces, old and new, there as possible.
With so much achieved in 2012 and so much to look forward to in 2013, we would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people, without whom, Remember Us and the work that we do, would not be possible. Thanks to the Department of Children Youth Affairs Section, the HSE and Fingal County Council for funding.
Thanks also to Friends of Autism Charity shop, everyone who made donations and everyone who supported our fundraising events, we are extremely grateful for their support and look forward to it again this year. Many thanks to Tesco Millfield for their continued support and commitment. Thanks also to Dunnes Store in Balbriggan and Pavillions for all of their help and support and thanks to Millfield and the Pavillions Shopping Centre for their support in our fundraising efforts in 2012. We look forward to working with you all again in 2013.
Thanks to Minister Reilly and Department of Health for National Lottery funding of €30,000 in 2012, which was used towards 4 family respite breaks. It is appreciated by all involved especially by our families who benefited greatly from the Respite breaks. Remember us offers the members a wide variety of activities and outings where they can learn, form friendships, develop their social and life skills, self esteem and quality of life and integrate into the community.
Remember us not only caters for the young person/adult with special needs but the whole family by providing support, information, talks, Summer Programmes & the family respite breakaways and more.
Remember us has always focused on the family as a complete unit and the respite breakaway trips involved the young people/adults with special needs, siblings, parents/carers. The integrated environment helps to dilute the social stigma often faced by families of a special needs young person. It also allowed the families to interact in a non structural environment that they may not have been able to create in everyday life.
The group has become a “lifeline” for them and so many other families. Some comments from the families who participated in other respite breakaway trips “Participating with others with similar abilities gave my daughter an invaluable social experience, incidentally it gave myself as a parent of a young person with special needs an invaluable network of pleasant understanding adults” , “it is a breathing space for parents”, “We don’t feel isolated as most of the parents are in a similar situation to ourselves”
Finally, huge thanks to all of our fantastic volunteers and to Anne and Vera, our Community Employment placements, without whom, club activities just would not be possible.
