Stephen Roche Challenge – A Fantastic Success

April 12, 2015 0

A BIG congratulations to all of the cyclists who took part in the Stephen Roche 3 County (80km) + 2 County (50km) Challenge today. The morning started with winds and driving rain but this didn’t dampen the spirits of the riders who, led out by Stephen, hit the course with great determination and spirit. During the course of the run riders were tested with harsh conditions for every turn of the pedals, testing even seasoned riders. Well deserved medals were waiting for them as they returned to the Balrothery Inn.

One lucky participant will WIN a cycling holiday courtesy of Stephen Roche. Click on the image for more info….

In a 13-year professional career, Stephen’s career peaked in 1987, becoming the second of only two cyclists to win the Triple Crown of victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia stage races, plus the World road race championship. After the run attendees had a chance to listen as Gerard Cromwell, cycling correspondent of the Independent and the Star and ghost writer of Inside the Peleton (the story of Nicholas Roche’s career as a professional cyclist) as he ran a Q & A session with Stephen giving a first hand insight into Stephen’s professional career. During the session you could hear a pin drop as the group were captivated by Stephen’s journey, many listening to their childhood hero.

If Stephen left the group with one message it was that cycling is for all ages that can be enjoyed by all generations. It pays to dig deep when the odds appear to be against you, if you’ve got what it takes, it will take everything you’ve got.

A big thank you to Stephen Roche, the amazing team who contributed to make the day a huge success – event director Wayne Cawley, Tom Quinlan, John MacCormack, Mark McCormack, the Balbriggan Cancer Support Group, the event volunteers and all the riders who spectators for a fantastic and memorable event..
