Thursday 14th June, saw the opening of Urban Lights salon in Millfield shopping centre in Balbriggan. The salon is run by Miriam Kelly who always dreamed of owning her own salon and after a brief chat with sister Sandra and brother in law Ritchie and a family business was born.
After Christmas the family started to look around for suitable premises and eventually Miriam called to state she found the place, Millfield shopping Centre. They viewed the premises and immediately Miriam had visions that this was the place for her. After lengthy negotiations, with estates agent, builders etc in March 2018 the plan was put in place.
The ribbon was cut by Brendan Courtney one of Ireland top fashion designers who is also a good friend of Sandra’s Brendan reminisced in his opening speech that his mother owned her own salon and every Christmas his house would smell of perm lotions. Brendan has his own fashion label “Lennon Courtney” which going from strength to strength every year. Also in attendance was Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee who also has her own law firm and her paths cross with Sandra in many cases when she was practicing.
Miriam, Ritchie and Sandra are the three Directors or Urban Lights. Sandra has her own law firm since September 2010 and for the last couple of years and has always tried to convince her sister Miriam to set up her own salon.
The McAleer family are born and raised in Balbriggan are no strangers to owning local businesses, dad Tony McAleer was the local butchers for 30 plus years until he closed down due to the foot and month crises in or around 2000. Mum Laurie has worked in the Maldron Hotel Airport for the last 30 years.
Tony and Laurie raised a family of 5, Anthony, Sandra, Lorna, Miriam and Ciara (the baby) who has lived in New Zealand for the last 3 and half years. Sandra’s husband Ritchie Santisteban is from Madrid , Spain but moved to Balbriggan 20 years ago.
From the amount of people attended the launch night and he the rows of flowers, cards and best wishes the team have received, Urban Lights Salon going one way and that is up.
